Letter #5 – Why Kids Should Always Be Grateful for Gifts.
Dear children,
This lesson is about gratitude for gifts.
When someone gives you a gift I want you to remember to always say thank you!! Because you need to remember that they didn’t have to buy you anything. That person has spent their time thinking about what to get you and going through the effort of actually buying it. And in most cases, they have spent their hard-earned money just to make you happy.
Even if it’s not the gift you wanted, be grateful. I want you to smile and say “Thank you very much, that’s really kind of you,” and show interest. Admire the gift for a moment and think about the effort the buyer went through to see a smile on your face. You could even ask a question about it to let the giver feel your appreciation.
Why? Because gratitude isn’t just about the object. It’s about the relationship.
When you show appreciation, you make the giver feel proud of their effort and you leave them feeling good about themselves. That builds stronger bonds — with family, friends and with everyone you meet.
And there’s a hidden benefit:
when you practise gratitude for small things like gifts, it becomes a habit — much like the self-talk habits we learned about here (Letter #1 Positive Self-Talk). Soon, you’ll start noticing more things to be thankful for — your health, your opportunities, even the challenges that help you grow.
Psychologists say gratitude changes the brain. It lifts your mood, reduces stress, and even makes you healthier. A grateful person attracts more kindness, because people enjoy being around them.
So remember:
- Always be grateful, even if it’s not “perfect.”
- Smile each time and say thank you.
- Always look for the effort behind the gift, not just the item itself.
Because when you do, you’ll not only make others feel good — you’ll become someone who sees the good in life, every single day.
