Letter #4 – The Power of Caring for Customers: Honesty, Trust, and Growth – For Kids

Dear children,

This lesson is about something that will change the way you work, build relationships, and even see yourself.

– It’s about caring for the people you serve. –

Whether you’re selling a product, offering a service, or simply helping someone make a decision — the mindset you carry matters.

Some people see sales as a game of taking. Salespeople themselves are sometimes seen as “slimy,” dishonest individuals. They think the goal is to get as much as possible from the customer, regardless of whether the product is the right fit. You’ve seen them — pushy, manipulative, chasing commission without caring what happens next.

They’ll tell you that you look great in something just to make a sale and hit their commission target for the day. They’ll praise a property as “perfect” while hiding the fact it’s in a high-crime area. The list goes on.

And here’s the ugly truth: many of them lie through their teeth to make a sale. They will exaggerate, promise things they know aren’t true and hide the problems.

But that’s not who we are. That’s not who you should ever be.

The right way to sell — and to live — is to be genuinely curious about the person in front of you: ask questions, understand their needs, and see the world from their side.

Your goal is simple: help them find a solution that truly improves their life.

With any transaction, make sure the customer is always happy and satisfied. Even research shows that customer trust is one of the most powerful drivers of repeat business.

When you work this way, something wonderful happens.

Instead of feeling like you’ve “won” a battle after closing a deal, you feel proud. You feel at peace. You know you’ve done something good — and that the person who trusted you will walk away better than before. Isn’t that a wonderful thing to be able to say you’ve done?

And this isn’t just about business ethics. It’s about your mental health.
When you make a living by deceiving or pressuring people, that tension lives in you. You may get short bursts of excitement from hitting targets, but in the quiet moments, you’ll feel empty.

But when you serve with honesty and care, every sale becomes a win–win. They get a solution. You get income. And you both walk away smiling.

Here’s a truth most people don’t realise:

Customers can feel your intentions.

If you’re just trying to “make the sale,” they’ll sense it. But if you’re trying to help them — really help them — they’ll feel that too.

People are far more likely to buy from someone they trust. And trust is built when your words and actions match your intentions. It also greatly increases the chances of repeat business, so it’s really a no-brainer!

Caring for your customer also means:

  • Never selling something they don’t need.
  • Being honest if your product isn’t the best fit — even if that means recommending a competitor.
  • Following up to make sure they’re happy after the sale.
  • Looking for ways to add value beyond what they’ve paid for.

These habits turn transactions into relationships. And relationships are what sustain a career, a business, and a good reputation.

It’s also worth remembering: every customer you serve is part of a larger network. Treat one person well, and they might tell ten others. Treat them poorly, and they might warn twenty.

When you care for people, the benefits ripple far beyond the immediate sale. You’re planting seeds that grow into referrals, partnerships, and opportunities you could never have bought with money alone.

So whether you one day run your own business, work in a shop, or even just help a friend choose a good book — treat that moment like it matters. Because it does.

Every interaction is a chance to show integrity. Each sale is a chance to serve. Each person is a chance to make the world a little better.
